As I sit here typing this update I am also busy with planning for our start of the summer event on the 22nd July and keeping my fingers firmly crossed for good weather on that day. It should be a great event which we are running in partnership with Wembury marine centre, South Devon AONB team and Military experiences. I will let you know how it went in the September edition of the Newsletter.

Where is this year going? It is flying by and I cannot believe we are already halfway through the year. At the beginning of June the team completed the first path cutting of the year. With the warm wet weather causing the vegetation to grow quickly, we will be back on the strimmer and flail mower later this month.

There were a couple of stormy days in February which saw a lot of rubbish washed up onto the beaches as well as some palm oil (waxy white lumps) which is toxic to animals if eaten. Please do keep an eye out for any palm oil on the beach and if possible bag it and remove it off site where an animal would not be able to ingest it.

I thought that in this article I would explain a bit about the area that the South Devon team manages. In our team there are 5 permanent and at present one seasonal member of staff. This is our core team and the area we cover is from Wembury Point in the West to Dartmouth in the East, some 8000 acres and 40 miles of coastline.

Firstly we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year for 2017.
At this time of year scrub clearance is a major part of our winter work and is likely to be taking place somewhere on our land in the next few months. It can look dramatic, but is vital for the restoration of the protected coastal grasslands.
